How to Reset a Kwikset Smart Lock
Performing a factory reset should be considered a last resort, but it may be necessary to resolve certain issues. Here is what you need to be sure you understand before factory resetting your Kwikset smart lock:
- Factory resetting Kwikset locks deletes all stored data
- Check your model number, as not all Kwikset locks are reset the exact same way
- The programming and user codes will be deleted, and it will be set to the default, User (0-0-0-0), Programming (1-2-3-4)
- You should change both the user and programming codes after resetting for safety
- A reset will disconnect the lock from apps and require you to set them up from scratch
The whole reset should only take a few minutes, and here are the 7 detailed steps on how to do it.
1. Unlock and Open the Door
The first step is to start with the door unlocked and open. This will help avoid any issues like it staying locked if there is an error in the process.
Set something in front of the door to ensure it doesn't close before you finish all the steps.
2. Take Off the Smart Lock Cover
To initiate the reset process, you must have access to two components—the batteries and the program button located on the inside of the lock. This requires removing the cover of the inner section of the lock.
Depending on the model, you may be able to pull the cover straight up and off. Otherwise, you'll have to locate the panel cover screws and remove them.
There are usually only a few screws, and they are located on the bottom. To ensure that the screws do not get misplaced, it is advisable to set them aside in a secure place.
3. Remove the Batteries
Most Kwikset smart locks come with a battery tray that can be found at the top of the lock, holding four AA batteries. Remove the whole tray, which is the rectangular portion visible at the top.
Once you have removed the tray, take a moment to ensure that the batteries are correctly installed and seated. Remember how you pulled them out, as they will need to go back in the same way during step five.
4. Begin Holding the Program Button Down
Once the batteries are removed, press and hold the main program button. It is not hard to locate and should be the only black button somewhere close to the center.
You will need to keep holding this button for the next few steps. Have the battery tray faced correctly and ready to be installed with your free hand.
5. Reinsert the Batteries With the Button Still Held
While still holding the program button, reinsert the batteries. Letting go of the button will disrupt the reset process, and you will have to start over.
Some trays have arrows that will remind you which way they went in.
6. Keep Holding for About 30 Seconds
Continue holding the program button for 30 seconds after the battery tray is installed. Release the button when the lock beeps and the LED flashes red.
7. Start the Handing Process
Many Kwikset models require pushing the button one time after the button is released, which automatically starts the handling process.
The handling process takes any from 5-20 seconds and is just your lock relearning the orientation of the door.
During this process, it may beep if not muted and extend/retract the lock a few times.
Manual Door Handing Process for Kwikset Smart Locks
Some models do require manually starting the handing process after a reset.
Here is how you perform the manual door-handing process for the following Kwikset lock Models:
- 909 SmartCode Electronic
- 910 SmartCode Electronic
- 913 SmartCode Electronic
- 914 SmartCode Electronic
- If the lock is installed on the door, be sure it is open.
- Remove the battery pack and check each one to be sure they are properly seated.
- Press and hold the lock button on the outer keypad.
- Keep the lock button held while reinstalling the battery pack.
- Release the lock button once the battery pack is back in place.
If the process goes well, the status light will flash green, and it may beep and start moving. Otherwise, a red light indicates that the process failed.
If needed, the manual handing process for the Kwikset 915 and 916 models is the same but requires holding the program button on the inside instead of the outer lock button.
