Resetting a Kwikset smart lock is a crucial step to take if you encounter any issues with the lock's performance or if you need to reset the lock code without using a key.

A factory reset on your Kwikset lock can be a simple fix for many issues and is simple to do. Just remember a reset deletes all codes and removes the lock from your smart home system.

  1. Unlock and Open the Door: Be sure the door is open and unlocked in case there is any issue with the lock.

  3. Remove the Batteries:  Take out the battery tray temporarily.
  4. Begin Holding the Program Button Down:  This will be held for about 30 seconds.
  5. Reinsert the Batteries With the Button Still Held: Replace the batteries with your other hand.
  6. Keep Holding for About 30 Seconds: Release when a flashing red LED indicates the process is completed.

How to Reset a Kwikset Smart Lock

Performing a factory reset should be considered a last resort, but it may be necessary to resolve certain issues. Here is what you need to be sure you understand before factory resetting your Kwikset smart lock:

  • Factory resetting Kwikset locks deletes all stored data
  • Check your model number, as not all Kwikset locks are reset the exact same way
  • The programming and user codes will be deleted, and it will be set to the default, User (0-0-0-0), Programming (1-2-3-4)
  • You should change both the user and programming codes after resetting for safety
  • A reset will disconnect the lock from apps and require you to set them up from scratch

The whole reset should only take a few minutes, and here are the 7 detailed steps on how to do it.

1. Unlock and Open the Door

The first step is to start with the door unlocked and open. This will help avoid any issues like it staying locked if there is an error in the process.

Set something in front of the door to ensure it doesn't close before you finish all the steps.

2. Take Off the Smart Lock Cover

To initiate the reset process, you must have access to two components—the batteries and the program button located on the inside of the lock. This requires removing the cover of the inner section of the lock.

Depending on the model, you may be able to pull the cover straight up and off. Otherwise, you'll have to locate the panel cover screws and remove them.

There are usually only a few screws, and they are located on the bottom. To ensure that the screws do not get misplaced, it is advisable to set them aside in a secure place.

3. Remove the Batteries

Most Kwikset smart locks come with a battery tray that can be found at the top of the lock, holding four AA batteries. Remove the whole tray, which is the rectangular portion visible at the top.

Once you have removed the tray, take a moment to ensure that the batteries are correctly installed and seated. Remember how you pulled them out, as they will need to go back in the same way during step five.

4. Begin Holding the Program Button Down

Once the batteries are removed, press and hold the main program button. It is not hard to locate and should be the only black button somewhere close to the center.

You will need to keep holding this button for the next few steps. Have the battery tray faced correctly and ready to be installed with your free hand.

5. Reinsert the Batteries With the Button Still Held

While still holding the program button, reinsert the batteries. Letting go of the button will disrupt the reset process, and you will have to start over.

Some trays have arrows that will remind you which way they went in.

6. Keep Holding for About 30 Seconds

Continue holding the program button for 30 seconds after the battery tray is installed. Release the button when the lock beeps and the LED flashes red.

7. Start the Handing Process

Many Kwikset models require pushing the button one time after the button is released, which automatically starts the handling process.

The handling process takes any from 5-20 seconds and is just your lock relearning the orientation of the door.

During this process, it may beep if not muted and extend/retract the lock a few times.

Manual Door Handing Process for Kwikset Smart Locks

Some models do require manually starting the handing process after a reset.

Here is how you perform the manual door-handing process for the following Kwikset lock Models:

  • 909 SmartCode Electronic
  • 910 SmartCode Electronic
  • 913 SmartCode Electronic
  • 914 SmartCode Electronic
  1. If the lock is installed on the door, be sure it is open.
  2. Remove the battery pack and check each one to be sure they are properly seated.
  3. Press and hold the lock button on the outer keypad.
  4. Keep the lock button held while reinstalling the battery pack.
  5. Release the lock button once the battery pack is back in place.

If the process goes well, the status light will flash green, and it may beep and start moving. Otherwise, a red light indicates that the process failed.

If needed, the manual handing process for the Kwikset 915 and 916 models is the same but requires holding the program button on the inside instead of the outer lock button.

How to Reset Other Kwikset Smart Lock Models

Kwikset has a ton of lock options to choose from, and some have unique ways of resetting them. We gathered the instructions for many of the popular options as they can be hard to find.

This section will help you with resetting the following Kwikset Smart Locks:

NOTE: These instructions assume you have the cover of the back panel removed, so you have access to the internal buttons.

Powerbolt 2 Reset

2. Enter the default Mastercode 0-0-0-0 and press the lock button. You should hear one beep.

3. Press 0, wait briefly, and then press the lock button. This begins the auto-handing process. If the handing process goes well, you should hear 2 beeps and see green flashing on the keys. If it is unsuccessful, you will hear 3 beeps and see red flashing on the keys.

4. With the door still opened, test that it locks by pressing the lock button.

5. Test that it unlocks by entering the default user code (1-2-3-4).

If anyone else can access the lock, be sure to change the default Mastercode(0-0-0-0) and delete the default user code (1-2-3-4).

919 Premis Touchscreen Reset

There are three different ways to reset the 919 Premis depending on what you need exactly.

1. Network Reset

A network reset on the 919 will remove your lock from apps and the Homekit system. This will delete users or schedules, but the app must be paired again for them to be in place.

To perform a network reset on the 919 Premis you can just follow the Premis app instructions to delete your lock from the app. You can also press and hold the "A" button on the back panel for 7 seconds until you hear one beep.

2. System Reset

A system reset on the Premis 919 does these things:

  • Removes lock from Premis app and HomeKit
  • Removes all users, user codes, and schedules added in the app or on the lock
  • Disables Auto-Lock
  • Turns on the Status LED and enables SecureScree if either was turned off within the app
  • Unmutes sound if it was muted in the Premise App

To do a system reset on the Premis 919, press and hold the "A" button on the back panel for about 20 seconds. You should hear one beep after 7 seconds, but keep holding until you hear a second.

3. Factory Reset

A factory reset on the Premis 919 does what both the network and system reset do, and also initiates the handing process.

To factory reset the Premis 919, follow the seven main reset steps listed above.

Halo Keypad or Touchscreen Wi-Fi Enabled Reset

There are three different reset options for the Halo Keypad and Touchscreen Smart Locks.

2. Release the button after 10 seconds. A blinking amber LED will indicate that you are in network reset mode.

3. Press the Program button once to confirm the network reset within ten seconds of releasing the "A" button. Success will be indicated by 1 long beep and a green LED. You should restart the steps if you hear 5 quick beeps and see the LED blinking red.

2. System Reset

A system reset on the Halo Smart Locks deletes access codes, deletes lock settings, and starts the auto-handing process.

Here are the steps for performing a network reset on a Kwikset Halo Smart Lock:

1. Press the "A" button 10 times. You should hear 1 beep and then see the LED blinking amber, indicating you are in system reset mode.

2. Press the Program button once to confirm the system reset. Success will be indicated by 1 long beep and a green LED. You should restart the steps if you hear 5 quick beeps and see the LED blinking red.

3. Factory Reset

A factory reset on the Halo Smart Locks does what both the network and system resets do and initiates the auto-handing process.

To factory reset both the Halo Keypad and Touchscreen models, follow the seven main reset steps listed above.

Kevo 1st & 2nd Gen Reset

A factory reset on a Kevo smart lock will erase all fobs and smartphone info from its memory.

To do a factory reset on a Kevo system, you press and hold the "A" reset button for 10 seconds until it beeps and the ring light flashes red.

You will need to re-enroll the owner's phone and fobs before using the lock again.
